By Coach Heather Owens, RN, BSN, MBA

There’s something that happens to me when my feet hit a trail.

Maybe it’s the way sunlight filters through the trees…
the smell of pine and earth after rain…
the sound of waterfalls crashing against ancient rocks…
or the way mountains make my problems suddenly feel smaller.

I feel my shoulders drop.

My breathing slows.

My nervous system softens.

I stop obsessing.
Stop scrolling.
Stop rushing.

And for a moment…
I remember what it feels like to simply be alive.

As someone who travels constantly for work, I’ve experienced this feeling in some truly breathtaking places. I’ve stood among the giant boulders of Scottsdale, Arizona as the desert glowed gold at sunset. I’ve hiked through the red rocks of Sedona feeling completely humbled by their beauty. I’ve breathed in the crisp mountain air of Lake Tahoe while staring at water so blue it almost didn’t look real.

But honestly?

I’ve also felt that same peace in the mountains of Georgia at places like Yona Mountain, Anna Ruby Falls, Amicalola Falls, and quiet little parks and trails close to home.

And that’s the beautiful thing about nature…

You don’t have to travel across the world to experience wonder.

Beauty exists everywhere if you’re willing to look for it.

Even places people may not consider glamorous — like Birmingham, Alabama — still have hidden trails, lakes, trees, sunsets, rivers, and moments of peace waiting to be discovered.

The world is still beautiful.

And I think a lot of us desperately need to remember that.

We Were Never Meant to Live This Disconnected

Modern life is exhausting.

We wake up and immediately check notifications.
We scroll while we eat.
We multitask constantly.
We compare ourselves online.
We feel pressure to hustle harder, achieve more, do more, be more.

And trust me — I understand hustle culture.

I’m ambitious.
I love building.
I love creating.
I love growing.

But somewhere along the way, many of us became overstimulated and under-connected.

Connected to WiFi…
but disconnected from ourselves.

We spend more time staring at screens than sunsets.
More time refreshing apps than refreshing our minds.
More time indoors than outside in the very world we were created to experience.

And our nervous systems are paying the price for it.

Anxiety.
Depression.
Burnout.
Mental exhaustion.
Overthinking.
Feeling disconnected from our bodies.
Feeling numb.
Feeling emotionally flat.

So many people today are mentally overwhelmed but physically under-connected to life itself.

And nature has an incredible way of bringing us back home to ourselves.

The Science Behind Why Nature Makes You Feel Better

This isn’t just “woo-woo.”
There’s actual science behind why spending time outdoors improves your mood, your mental health, and even your physical wellbeing.

Research has shown that spending time in nature can reduce cortisol levels — the body’s primary stress hormone. Nature also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest and digest” system, which helps calm the body after chronic stress.

That’s why after sitting beside a lake…
walking through the woods…
or hiking a mountain trail…

you often feel lighter, calmer, and more emotionally regulated.

Sunlight itself also plays a huge role in mental health.

Natural sunlight supports serotonin and dopamine production — neurotransmitters associated with mood, motivation, and emotional wellbeing. Exposure to sunlight also helps regulate circadian rhythms, improving sleep quality and energy levels.

And movement outdoors amplifies those benefits even more.

Walking has been shown to improve blood flow to the brain, reduce rumination (repetitive anxious thinking), improve creativity, and support emotional processing.

Even a short walk can interrupt anxiety loops.

That’s powerful.

Nature also creates something psychologists call “awe.”

Awe is the feeling we experience when we encounter something vast, beautiful, or greater than ourselves — like mountains, waterfalls, oceans, giant forests, or endless stars in the sky.

And awe changes us.

It reduces self-focused thinking.
It increases gratitude.
It improves emotional wellbeing.
It reminds us that there is something bigger than our stress, bigger than our inboxes, bigger than our fears.

That’s why standing beside a massive waterfall can feel almost spiritual.

That’s why oceans make us emotional.
Why sunsets stop us in our tracks.
Why mountains humble us.

Nature has a way of softening the nervous system while expanding the soul.

Nature Pulls You Out of Your Head and Back Into Your Body

Anxiety lives in the future.

Overthinking lives in the mind.

But nature grounds you in the present moment.

When you’re outside, your senses wake back up.

You hear birds singing.
You feel wind against your skin.
You notice flowers blooming.
You smell rain in the air.
You hear water rushing over rocks.
You watch sunlight dance through leaves.

And suddenly…
your brain gets quieter.

Your body relaxes.

You come back into the moment.

This is one reason grounding techniques are so effective for anxiety and depression. Nature naturally engages all five senses, which helps pull the brain away from spiraling thoughts and back into physical reality.

It’s one of the reasons hiking, walking outdoors, gardening, beach walks, kayaking, and even simply sitting outside can feel so healing.

Nature reminds you that you are not a machine.

You are a human being.

And human beings need sunlight.
Fresh air.
Movement.
Stillness.
Beauty.
Wonder.
Connection.

Adventure Is a Mindset

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is thinking adventure only exists in expensive vacations or exotic destinations.

But adventure is really a mindset.

It’s curiosity.
Presence.
Exploration.
Playfulness.
Wonder.

Sometimes adventure looks like hiking in Sedona.

Sometimes it looks like finding a local trail 15 minutes from your house.

Sometimes it’s watching the sunset after work instead of rushing straight back inside.

Sometimes it’s taking your coffee outside in the morning.

Sometimes it’s driving to a waterfall on a random Saturday and letting yourself feel small beneath something magnificent.

You do not have to wait for the “perfect life” to start living.

There is beauty all around you right now.

You just have to notice it.

You Don’t Have to Be Extreme to Start

And let me say this clearly:

You do not have to become some extreme outdoors person overnight.

You do not have to climb mountains your first day.
You do not need expensive gear.
You do not need to be super fit.

Start where you are.

Walk five minutes…
then walk back.

Sit outside barefoot in the grass.
Go to a local park.
Take a short beginner trail.
Stretch outside in the sunlight.
Watch a sunrise.
Listen to water.
Put your phone away for a little while.

Your nervous system still benefits.

Your mind still benefits.
Your body still benefits.
Your soul still benefits.

Small moments matter.

Tiny experiences of peace compound over time.

Nature Reminds Me That Life Is Still Beautiful

I think one of the reasons nature affects me so deeply is because it reconnects me to gratitude.

To God.
To creation.
To perspective.

No matter how stressful life gets…
how busy work becomes…
how anxious the world feels…

there are still mountains.
Still waterfalls.
Still oceans.
Still flowers blooming.
Still sunsets painting the sky.
Still birds singing in the morning.

There is still beauty here.

And honestly?
I think we heal a little every time we remember that.

Nature reminds me that life is not just about productivity.

It’s about presence.

It’s about feeling fully alive.

It’s about laughing on a trail.
Feeling your heartbeat during a climb.
Watching light reflect across water.
Breathing deeply.
Feeling connected.
Feeling grounded.
Feeling grateful to simply exist here at all.

Final Thoughts 🌎

So this is your reminder to go outside.

Let the sun touch your skin.
Let the wind clear your mind.
Let the mountains humble you.
Let the waterfalls soften you.
Let the ocean remind you how vast life really is.

Move your body.
Breathe deeply.
Look around.
Reconnect with yourself.

The world can feel heavy sometimes.

But there is still so much beauty here.

And maybe…
just maybe…
the healing you’ve been searching for starts with stepping outside and remembering you were always part of nature too. 🌿
