TURN FAILS INTO FUEL: How Every Setback Became My Comeback
Aug 15, 2025I’ve built studios. I’ve closed studios.
I’ve signed divorce papers… and then torn them up.
I’ve failed classes, failed in business, failed in friendships.
And I’ve gotten back up. Every. Single. Time.
Because here’s the truth: anything worth doing will test you first.
Failure is not a sign you should quit — it’s the training ground that shapes your success.
My First Studio: Fitness in Vogue
Over 20 years ago, I opened my first fitness studio, Fitness in Vogue. My big signature class? Cosmic Bling — a high-energy, glittering party where we danced, laughed, and sweated together.
At first, just a few women showed up. But within months, I had 50 people packing my classes. I taught kids cardio in over a dozen daycare centers. I was earning well over six figures in under six months.
Then came my first real mistake.
I hated dealing with the money. I had deep-rooted beliefs that making too much meant I was greedy, or even “bad.” So I handed over my business bank account, my Social Security number, and complete control of the finances to someone I trusted — a girl I’d known for years.
It did not end well.
Looking back, it wasn’t just poor judgment; it was imposter syndrome in action. I didn’t feel worthy of my own success.
The Hip-Hop Fitness Era
A decade later, I started Hip-Hop Fitness — and it exploded. Some nights we had 150 women in a gym, moving in sync, filling the air with joy and power. Women got up front to help me teach. It was electric.
But behind the scenes? Life was falling apart. My husband had just been diagnosed with Graves’ disease. A close friend had become controlling and emotionally abusive. I was drained. Teaching became something I dreaded because of the emotional weight attached to it.
Seven years in, I walked away. Not because the business failed — it was thriving — but because I was failing to care for myself.
From Nurse to MBA to Coach Heather Owens
I went back to school, earned my nursing degree, graduated at the top of my class (even after failing my first psych nursing exam with a 36%), earned my MBA, and built a career I love as a Clinical Trial Educator. I travel the U.S. and Canada, work with brilliant healthcare providers, and make a six-figure income in a job that matters.
But that fire to lead women in movement? It never went out.
In December 2024, I launched Coach Heather Owens online. And on December 27, 2025, I’ll open LuminaFit™, my new luxury women’s fitness studio. This time, I’m building it with wisdom earned from every stumble — inclusive, safe, uplifting, and unforgettable.
Why Failure Is Your Greatest Teacher
Science agrees:
-
Neuroplasticity – Mistakes light up your brain’s learning centers, helping you adapt faster.
-
Dopamine in challenge – Struggle itself can be motivating when paired with positive cues like music, community, or celebration.
-
Stress inoculation – Facing discomfort trains your nervous system to stay calm under pressure.
-
Post-traumatic growth – Setbacks can deepen your relationships, purpose, and appreciation for life.
Mindset Shifts That Changed My Life
-
Failure = Feedback – Every “no” or misstep is data you can use.
-
Courage > Comfort – Growth feels risky. That’s how you know you’re in it.
-
Small Wins Stack – Keep moving forward in tiny, doable steps.
-
Protect Your Energy – No business is worth sacrificing your mental health.
The “Fails to Fuel” Playbook
-
The 10-Minute Autopsy: After a miss, write what happened, why, and one improvement.
-
Micro-Stress Reps: Do something daily that stretches you 5–10%.
-
Dopamine Pairing: Link hard work with pleasure (favorite playlist, candle, post-workout ritual).
-
Brave Circle: Share weekly “lessons learned” with trusted women.
-
Iterate in Public: Launch version 1, improve, repeat.
Journal Prompts
-
What did my last “failure” teach me that success couldn’t?
-
Where am I holding back out of fear of failing again?
-
If I believed failure was essential to my dream, what risk would I take today?
-
Who can I invite into my circle to cheer me on through both wins and losses?
Full Circle
I’ve failed at love. At friendship. At business. At parenting. I’ve failed tests, lost money, and given up things I loved.
And yet here I am — about to open a studio again, just like in my 20s, but with two decades more wisdom, strength, and heart.
Failure hasn’t broken me.
It’s built me.
