⨠The Neuroscience of Belief: Why Seeing Possibility Is Step One to Success
Jul 02, 2025By Heather Owens, RN, MBA – Keynote Speaker | Mindset & Life Coach | Host of the Look At Me Now Podcast
đĽ You’re Not Too Much. You’re Just Tuning Into What’s Possible.
When I was twelve, my English teacher pulled me aside and said the words that echoed for years:
“Heather, you’re too much. Too loud. Too excited. Too everything.”
So I started to shrink.
I softened my voice. Dimmed my sparkle. Tried to become a more “acceptable” version of myself.
But life doesn’t reward smallness. It rewards truth.
Flash forward to nursing school:
I was finishing a night shift after two Code Blues—two lives on the line, two resuscitations, and one completely depleted human driving home at sunrise.
I was mascara-smeared, exhausted, and muttering to myself:
“Life is just suffering… with coffee breaks.”
That’s when my mentor texted me:
“Find three proofs life is still good—before the sun comes up.”
I rolled my eyes... but I did it.
-
A janitor was whistling My Girl in the hallway đś
-
A stranger paid my toll at the booth đ
-
The sky turned watermelon-pink over Piedmont Park đ
And something changed in me.
My shoulders dropped. My breathing deepened. My heart softened.
And for the first time in weeks, I thought:
“Maybe life isn’t just survival. Maybe it can be beautiful again.”
That moment became the seed of my 12-Step Success Method—the life framework I now teach to thousands.
đ§ The Science Behind the Spark
We didn’t just “make up” belief. It’s built into your brain and biology.
Here’s how possibility literally changes your life:
đ§ 1. Reticular Activating System (RAS) – Your Mental Gatekeeper
The RAS is a bundle of neurons in your brainstem that acts like a filter. It decides what information gets your attention and what fades into the background.
đ§ If you believe the world is dangerous or hopeless, your RAS will block out opportunities and joy.
đĄ But when you tell it, “Life is good,” it starts highlighting connection, growth, and possibility.
This is why you suddenly notice a car model after thinking about buying it—your RAS got the memo.
⥠2. Expectancy Theory – What You Believe, You Energize
Psychologist Victor Vroom developed this theory to explain how motivation works. In simple terms:
If you don’t believe your effort will lead to a meaningful outcome, you won’t bother trying.
But when you believe—truly believe—that your actions can change your results, your energy skyrockets.
⥠You get out of bed with purpose.
⥠You show up differently at work, in relationships, and for yourself.
Belief flips the switch.
đą 3. Growth Mindset (Dr. Carol Dweck) – You’re Not Fixed
Dr. Dweck discovered that people who believe they can improve actually do better in life.
“The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life.”
A growth mindset literally retrains your brain to focus on learning and resilience.
đą Instead of “I failed,” you say, “I’m learning.”
đą Instead of “This is hard,” you say, “This is helping me grow.”
That subtle shift opens the door to personal transformation.
đ 4. Broaden-and-Build Theory (Dr. Barbara Fredrickson) – Emotions Expand Your World
Positive emotions like joy, gratitude, and curiosity don’t just feel good—they build resources.
đ§ They expand your thinking, help you form deeper relationships, and allow you to see creative solutions in tough situations.
When you're stuck in fear or survival mode, your vision narrows. But when you're hopeful and grounded in gratitude, your brain opens up to new ideas, people, and paths forward.
đ 5. Neuroplasticity – Your Brain Is Always Changing
You’re not stuck. Your brain is capable of rewiring at any age.
Every time you think a new thought, your brain strengthens or prunes neural pathways. Focus on fear? It grows. Focus on hope? That grows instead.
đ§ Gratitude, visualization, journaling, and mindset work aren’t fluff—they are literally brain training.
You can change your reality by changing what you practice thinking.
⨠Try This Tonight: The 3-Proof Challenge
Want to put this science into action right now?
Here’s your first micro-step toward rewiring your brain for hope, confidence, and possibility:
đŻď¸ Step 1: Set a 10-minute timer tonight before bed.
đ Step 2: Write down 3 small but real “proofs” that life is good.
đ Step 3: Repeat for 21 days.
đŻ This trains your RAS, your motivation system, and your mood to start looking for what’s right instead of what’s missing.
đĄ Two Real-Life Mindset Hacks
đĽ At Work – Salary or Leadership Conversation
Start with connection:
“I’m grateful to be part of this team and excited to grow with the company.”
Then say:
“Is now a good time to chat?”
That “yes” activates a sense of partnership and lowers defensiveness, giving your request a stronger chance.
đ At Home – Tough Conversations with a Partner
Before diving in, set the tone with warmth.
Sit close. Light a candle. Say:
“I love us, and I’m grateful we can talk like this.”
This tells the nervous system: “We’re safe here.” And safe people listen better.
