Why I Stopped Living in Boxes (And Started Living Fully)
Jun 29, 2026By Coach Heather Owens, RN, BSN, MBA
Have you ever felt like you're constantly trying to fit yourself into a box?
The successful career box.
The good mother box.
The good wife box.
The fitness box.
The entrepreneur box.
The responsible woman box.
For years, I didn't realize how much I was doing this.
Not because anyone told me to.
Because somewhere along the way, I started believing that in order to be successful, I had to become one thing.
Focused.
Disciplined.
Productive.
Responsible.
And while those qualities helped me build a beautiful life, they also caused me to forget something important:
Human beings were never meant to live inside boxes.
The Problem with Labels
Recently, I heard someone talking about how they would jump from one identity to another.
The yoga person.
The keto person.
The hiker.
The luxury traveler.
The minimalist.
The entrepreneur.
And I laughed because I saw myself immediately.
I have been the Clinical Nurse Educator.
The fitness instructor.
The founder.
The wife.
The mother.
The coach.
The businesswoman.
The achiever.
The responsible one.
The truth is, none of those identities are wrong.
The problem happens when we start believing we have to choose only one.
When we become so attached to a role that we stop allowing ourselves to evolve.
When we become so focused on responsibility that we forget joy.
So focused on productivity that we forget presence.
So focused on achievement that we forget to actually enjoy our lives.
The Box I Didn't Realize I Was Living In
Of all the boxes I created for myself, one stood out above the rest.
The Responsible Woman Box.
You know the one.
The woman who always gets things done.
The woman everyone can count on.
The woman who works hard.
The woman who sacrifices.
The woman who keeps moving.
The woman who carries everything.
The woman who rarely slows down long enough to celebrate.
For years, I thought responsibility and playfulness were opposites.
I thought success required seriousness.
I thought if I let myself have too much fun, I might somehow lose my drive.
But recently I realized something powerful:
I am already responsible.
I don't need to prove it anymore.
The Neuroscience of Identity
Our brains are designed to create patterns.
When we repeat the same thoughts and behaviors long enough, our brains build neural pathways around them.
Eventually, identities become automatic.
"I'm the responsible one."
"I'm the caretaker."
"I'm the achiever."
"I'm the strong one."
And while these identities can be helpful, they can also become invisible cages.
Because once we identify with them, we often stop questioning them.
We stop asking whether they still serve us.
We stop asking whether we've outgrown them.
Growth doesn't always require becoming someone new.
Sometimes growth requires releasing identities that are too small for who you're becoming.
What I Learned About Myself
One of the biggest realizations I've had recently is that I don't actually dislike work.
In fact, I love much of what I do.
I love teaching.
I love speaking.
I love creating.
I love recording podcasts.
I love fitness.
I love helping people.
I love building LuminaFit.
I love traveling and exploring new places.
I love connecting with people.
Those things energize me.
What drains me is administrative work.
The paperwork.
The spreadsheets.
The endless operational details.
The problem wasn't that I needed more discipline.
The problem was that I was organizing my entire life around the smallest part of my work that I enjoy the least.
Returning to the Fun Girl
One phrase kept coming up in my journal:
"I want to get back to the fun girl."
Not because she disappeared.
Because she got buried under responsibility.
The truth is, the fun girl is still here.
She loves dancing.
She loves adventure.
She loves beautiful hotels.
She loves dressing up.
She loves meaningful conversations.
She loves learning.
She loves romance.
She loves laughing until her stomach hurts.
And here's what I'm finally understanding:
Those things are not distractions from my success.
They are the source of it.
The most magnetic version of me has never been the most productive version.
The most magnetic version of me is the most alive version of me.
How I'm Romanticizing My Life
Instead of waiting for special occasions, I'm creating more beauty in everyday moments.
Drinking tea from beautiful china.
Writing handwritten notes to people I love.
Celebrating small wins.
Taking dance classes.
Watching sunsets.
Savoring meals instead of rushing through them.
Exploring cities when I travel.
Dancing in hotel rooms.
Sending thoughtful letters.
Buying flowers.
Being fully present.
Not because these things make me more productive.
Because they make me feel alive.
Questions for Reflection
If you're reading this, I invite you to reflect on a few questions:
-
What boxes have you put yourself in?
-
Which identities no longer fit who you're becoming?
-
What parts of yourself have you been neglecting?
-
When do you feel most alive?
-
What would happen if you trusted yourself more?
-
What would you do if you stopped trying to earn your worth?
You Don't Have to Choose
The biggest lesson I'm learning right now is this:
I don't have to choose between being successful and being joyful.
I don't have to choose between discipline and spontaneity.
I don't have to choose between ambition and presence.
I don't have to choose between being a good wife, a good mother, a successful entrepreneur, a fitness instructor, a nurse, a traveler, a dreamer, or a woman who simply loves life.
I can be all of those things.
And so can you.
Life was never meant to be lived inside boxes.
It was meant to be experienced fully.
So here's your reminder today:
Celebrate yourself.
Celebrate the people you love.
Take the dance class.
Write the letter.
Order the tea.
Watch the sunset.
Laugh a little louder.
Love a little deeper.
And stop waiting until you've accomplished enough to start enjoying your life.
Your life is happening right now.
Live it fully.
