Sometimes it's not the big things that wear us down. It's the hundreds of little things we never realized were costing us our peace.

For years, I thought I needed more discipline.

A better planner.

A more productive morning routine.

Another app.

Another notebook.

Another system.

But after reflecting on one of the biggest years of my life, I realized something that completely changed the way I think.

I didn't have a discipline problem.

I had an energy leak problem.

And once I saw it…

I couldn't unsee it.

I Was Looking in the Wrong Place

Like many women, I assumed the things draining me were obvious.

Working.

Traveling.

Long days.

Taking care of everyone else.

Building a business.

Those things certainly required energy.

But they weren't what exhausted me the most.

What drained me were the tiny things I repeated every single day.

Looking for my keys.

Searching for my phone.

Wondering where I left my charger.

Walking into a cluttered room.

Putting off an email because I was overthinking my response.

Saying "yes" when my heart wanted to say "no."

Trying to convince people to see my value.

Carrying relationships that had already become heavy.

None of those things seemed significant on their own.

But together?

They quietly stole my joy.

The Weight We Don't Notice

As a registered nurse, I've always loved understanding how our minds work.

One thing psychology teaches us is that our brains have a limited amount of mental energy each day.

Every decision.

Every interruption.

Every unfinished task.

Every unresolved relationship.

Every pile of clutter.

Every difficult conversation we replay in our minds.

They all ask our brains to carry one more thing.

Eventually, we become mentally tired—not because life is impossible, but because we're carrying far more than we realize.

No wonder we're exhausted.

The Relationship Between Peace and Energy

This year, I realized something I wish every woman understood.

Your energy isn't only affected by what you do.

It's affected by what you tolerate.

The clutter you keep walking past.

The friendships that leave you feeling unseen.

The constant need to prove yourself.

The habit of saying yes when you mean no.

The negative self-talk you would never speak to someone you love.

Protecting your peace isn't selfish.

It's one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself and for the people you love.

Because when you're emotionally depleted, it's much harder to be patient with your children.

To truly listen to your spouse.

To show up as your best self at work.

To have the emotional capacity to love well.

Healthy relationships don't grow in chronic exhaustion.

They grow where there's emotional space.

Build Systems That Love You Back

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that simple systems create more freedom than complicated goals.

Give your keys a permanent home.

Answer the short email now instead of carrying it around in your mind all day.

Prepare tomorrow's gym clothes tonight.

Keep a notebook by your bed for ideas instead of trying to remember everything.

Protect the first hour of your morning before the world starts asking for pieces of you.

These aren't just productivity hacks.

They're gifts to your future self.

Every system removes one small decision.

Every small decision you eliminate creates more room for joy.

The People Who Give You Energy

I've also learned to pay attention to how people make me feel.

Some people leave you feeling lighter.

Encouraged.

Inspired.

Safe.

Seen.

Others leave you second-guessing yourself.

Feeling drained.

Feeling like you have to earn your place.

The older I get, the more intentional I've become about protecting my inner circle.

Not because I love people less.

Because I finally understand that my energy affects every relationship in my life.

When I'm healthy, rested, and emotionally grounded...

I become a better wife.

A better mom.

A better friend.

A better nurse.

A better leader.

A better version of myself.

Five Ways to Protect Your Energy This Week

1. Find one unnecessary source of friction and eliminate it.

Maybe it's creating a home for your keys.

Maybe it's cleaning your kitchen before bed.

Maybe it's unsubscribing from emails you never read.

Small changes create big peace.

2. Ask yourself, "Does this relationship bring out the best in me?"

Healthy relationships don't require perfection.

But they should encourage growth, honesty, kindness, and mutual respect.

3. Stop carrying conversations that already ended.

If you've apologized, learned, and grown, give yourself permission to move forward.

Not every conversation deserves free rent in your mind.

4. Protect your mornings.

Before you scroll.

Before you answer emails.

Before you meet everyone else's expectations.

Spend a few moments meeting your own.

Pray.

Journal.

Move your body.

Breathe.

Begin your day with intention.

5. Remember that peace is built, not found.

It isn't waiting for you somewhere in the future.

It's created through the choices you make every single day.
